Depuis plus de cinquante ans, Ernest Pignon-Ernest installe ses dessins dans les rues des villes du monde. Il offre ainsi aux « regardeurs » ses oeuvres qui semblent échappées des murs pour s'imposer peu à peu dans nos esprits, comme des icônes, des traces essentielles, empreintes des époques et des lieux qu'elles traversent. Il en est ainsi de Pasolini, Rimbaud et de bien d'autres figures de poètes, mais aussi de ses interventions dans des contextes difficiles qui, à Haïti, Soweto, Alger ou à Calais par exemple, sont devenues les emblèmes partagés des luttes ou des souffrances. For more than fifty years now, Ernest Pignon Ernest has been placing his drawings in the streets of the cities of the world. The artist offers to the 'viewers' his works that seem to escape from the walls to gradually settle in our minds like icons, essential traces, prints of the times and places they have traversed. It is the case too with Pasolini, Rimbaud and many other poet figures, and also with his interventions in challenging contexts that, in Haiti, in Soweto, in Algiers or Calais, for example, have become shared symbols of people's struggles and suffering. Already well known, mindful of the state of the world, fired by his passion for art and poetry, at times considered a pioneer of urban art, Ernest Pignon Ernest is an exacting artist. This book and the exhibition that generated it, documents the whole of his approach and gathers together more than three hundred works, sketches, drawings, nocturnal collages in sites carefully selected, photographs and the reactions of the residents, as well as original studies of his recent work on Victor Segalen, the poet from Brittany.
